Palavra à deriva (“word adrift”) investigates interstitial spaces as thresholds for site-specific translations. Taking distance not as an inert quality, but a productive space between objects, the project critically addresses the gaze as a mode of separation and othering, showcasing the vibrational affect of distance in between. By reiterating the translation of voice to light to sound across different contexts, each gesture attempts to evidence the transformation of meaning that occurs when crossing a distance.
Pela terceira margem (“through the third margin”) was developed specifically for the river Weser at the opposite side of GAK Bremen. In the performance, the artist stands at the opposite side of the river reciting a poem that crosses the river as light and is translated back as sound inside the gallery space, evidencing what gets lost and transformed in-between: an ecology of objects (birds, wind, rain) besides an artist’s voice in the distance. As light crosses the distance faster than sound, in the performance, the vibrational dissonance is both heard and visualized uniquely in time beyond documentation.
A onça que sondava voz (“the jaguar that probed voice”) was born out of an alleged documentation of the previous performance (see text reference below). In the installation, a sound recording of the artist’s voice was stretched to different lengths to uncover hidden truths about a document in translation: a jaguar from the artist’s past, crossing through the distance of memory.
O Amanhã (“the tomorrow”) was a site-specific installation between two balconies of Palazzo Mora during the Personal Structures Biennial in Venice 2024. In the installation, the artist’s voice speaking the word “amanhã” was stretched to the length of the Earth’s day (23º 56’). Transduced between the two balconies in a feedback loop, the soundscape transforms daily in translation between the two sites, evidencing the shift of a different kind of tomorrow, where the speed of one’s tongue translates into that of the ecology on site.
